What You’ll Do
Denver's Department of Public Health and Environment (DDPHE) is dedicated to advancing Denver's environmental and public health goals. DDPHE works collaboratively with city, state and community partners to conduct education, community engagement, and enforcement to promote healthy people, healthy pets, and a sustainable environment. DDPHE oversees services related to public health and the environment and is comprised of six divisions: Division of Shared Services and Business Operations; Community & Behavioral Health; Public Health Investigations; Denver Animal Protection; the Office of Medical Examiner; and Environmental Quality. Workforce Engagement and Development (WEDT) Intern position available for those interested in exploring a career in public and/or environmental health. Successful candidates will be supporting DDPHE’s workforce development efforts. Additionally, they will receive on-the-job training to build the skills and knowledge needed to advance into a public health career.
Specifically, as the
Workforce Engagement and Development (WEDT) Intern you will:
- Provide support for DDPHE workforce engagement and development team goals.
- Assist with the design and implementation of a stay interview pilot project.
- Conduct outreach to DDPHE staff to coordinate and schedule interviews.
- Create data collection instrument(s)
- Collect and analyze data from staff to identify workforce retention efforts.
- Use databases to collect and track information.
- Develop presentations and reports
- Research and identify Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB) recommendations for workforce development
- Other duties as assigned.
On the job training will include:
- Division, program and topic specific priorities, key partners, and evidence-based practices.
- Public Health 101 guided by the 10 essential public health services.
- Providing culturally and linguistically appropriate outreach, engagement and services
- Safety rules and procedures. Industry and regulatory standards, operational processes, and other guidance about professional practices.

About You Our ideal candidate has some or all the following experience, skills, and characteristics:
- An interest in supporting the public health workforce
- An interest in human resources, data collection and analysis, social work, public health, or other related fields
- Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
- Attention to detail, organization, and multitasking.
- A willingness to learn new things.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills.
- A positive attitude and desire to be a team player.
Required Minimum Qualifications - Education requirement: Current enrollment in an accredited college program leading to a certificate, licensure, associates, bachelor’s, or higher degree in, or a recent graduate (completed specified program within 1 year of completion).
- Experience Requirement: None
- Education/Experience Equivalency: No substitution of experience for education is permitted.
- License/Certifications: None
Note: While a driver’s license is not required, individuals in these positions may need to attend in-person events around Denver. The individuals must arrange for transportation to attend such events should they arise. What We Offer
The City and County of Denver offers a competitive rate commensurate with education. All City and County of Denver emerging talent positions are supported by a trained hiring manager and encouraged to attend up to 4 sessions of professional development each season (Winter/Spring, Summer and Fall). You will be onboarded with a cohort of peers to begin to help you develop your network across the City and so you can go through similar programming throughout your time at the City. This is an internship for
Fall 2024 to be completed by the end of the year.
Location Flexibility The City and County of Denver utilizes a hybrid model workplace that balances the responsibilities of public service with the benefits of a flexible work environment. Employees work where needed, at a city site and/or in the field several days a week and telecommute remotely at a designated workplace within the State of Colorado the remaining days.
